During this 2023 National Celebration of Pro Bono, the Center for Medicare Advocacy celebrates and honors the attorneys and law firms that contribute their time, expertise, and resources to supporting our mission of advancing access to Medicare, health equity, and quality health care. We highlight the following pro bono partners for expanding our capacity to litigate on behalf of beneficiaries:
- This year Murphy Orlando LLC helped the Center obtain Medicare coverage of a critically-needed drug for a retired public school teacher in New Jersey. Murphy Orlando’s generous assistance resulted in a settlement that provides much-needed relief and peace of mind to the beneficiary, and built on another case that the Center won last year.
- Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati has provided extraordinary assistance in a nationwide class action that won appeal rights for certain Medicare beneficiaries who are placed in “observation status” in hospitals – a designation that can cost patients thousands of dollars or force them to forgo necessary health care. The Center’s partnership with Wilson Sonsini led to a successful trial decision that was resoundingly affirmed on appeal in 2022, and is now in the implementation phase. Wilson Sonsini’s commitment to this case over many years and longstanding collaboration with the Center on this case and others has been invaluable.
- We also thank Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld and Stinson LLP for their work with the Center on other cases. Their expertise and commitment to pro bono service for older adults and people with disabilities are of tremendous benefit to our justice system.
