Using a random sample of 100 nursing facilities, identified as of August 2020, the HHS Office of Inspector General (OIG) reports in CMS Did Not Accurately Report on Care Compare One or More Deficiencies Related to Health, Fire Safety, and Emergency Preparedness for an Estimated Two-Thirds of Nursing Homes (April 2023) that the federal website Care Compare did not accurately report deficiencies that were cited at 67 of the 100 facilities (two-thirds). Health deficiencies were missing for 34 facilities; fire safety deficiencies, for 52 facilities; and emergency preparedness, for two facilities. OIG’s April 2023 findings are similar to OIG’s findings in 2004, Inspection Results on Nursing Home Compare: Completeness and Accuracy, when OIG identified missing survey information in 19% of a random sample of 150 facilities.
