Season’s Greetings, Medicare Friend

December 21, 2023

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Thank you for being part of the Center for Medicare Advocacy’s national community. For decades, we have taken what we learn from assisting individual Medicare beneficiaries and used it to push for systemic policy changes to improve access to care and health outcomes for all. One of our top concerns is the growing privatization of the Medicare program through Medicare Advantage (MA) plans.

On one hand, more than half of all Medicare beneficiaries are now enrolled in such plans, and we need to ensure that the needs of those people are being met and that private plans are held accountable for providing the care that is so sorely needed. Among other things, we are fighting inappropriate denials and delays in care, and raising awareness of marketing misconduct and other problems faced by MA enrollees.

On the other hand, we must preserve and strengthen the traditional (Original) Medicare program by expanding coverage and reducing out-of-pocket costs, which would benefit everyone with Medicare. We are pushing policymakers to recognize the value of the national treasure that is traditional Medicare.

We could not do this work without support from our community of friends, colleagues, and donors. As a donor to the Center, you can make a tremendous impact today. Please consider making a donation by clicking here to help launch our crucial work into 2024. Thank you!

Sincerely,

David Lipschutz
Associate Director/Senior Policy Attorney

A recent @statnews article revealed a federal review showing the major Medicare Advantage insurers denied long-term care hospital prior auths 71–80% of the time, while industry peers averaged 42%.

Some denials were later overturned 92–99.7% of the time. A denial is not always
