As part of the Center’s ongoing project on approaches to improve nurse staffing levels in nursing facilities, this week we are posting a paper on “Increasing Reimbursement.” This approach increases reimbursement to nursing facilities on the assumption and expectation that nursing facilities will use some of the increased reimbursement to increase their staffing levels. This approach – at the federal level with Medicare and at the state level with Medicaid, in both Florida and California – was not successful. Increased reimbursement led to little change in staffing.
