When most of the country was asleep this Saturday, the Senate passed its version of a so-called tax “reform” bill. The senate bill undermines the Affordable Care Act and provides massive tax cuts for large corporations and wealthy people. It would explode the federal deficit, setting the stage for an immediate Medicare cut and future major cuts and changes to Medicaid, Medicare and Social Security. The Congressional Budget Office anticipates that Medicare alone will be cut by $25 billion in 2018. Myriad other programs that support older people, people with disabilities and families all over the country would also be on the chopping block.
Regrettably, senators and members of Congress supporting this bill and the parallel House bill made their priorities clear. They sided with the rich and powerful at the expense of everyday people. Senator Rubio said “The driver of our debt is the structure of Social Security and Medicare for future beneficiaries.” Senator Grassley said “I think not having the estate tax recognizes the people that are investing, as opposed to those that are just spending every darn penny they have, whether it’s on booze or women or movies." Congressman Chris Collins said, “My donors are basically saying, ‘Get it done or don’t ever call me again.” Senator Lindsey Graham said “contributions will stop” if they couldn’t get the bill passed.
The process is on-going. More votes will be taken. So it’s not too late to change the course of these awful tax bills.
We need to speak out against this assault on our national values and families!
