How to Overcome Current Challenges and Ensure Facilities Are Fully Staffed and All Residents Receive the Care they Need
Meaningful nurse staffing levels in nursing facilities are possible and can be achieved, even under current challenges. Although the enhanced facility assessment process is one of only two parts of the final federal nurse staffing rule that remain in effect, that process, if implemented effectively to address resident acuity (as proposed in a recent paper by Charlene Harrington and colleagues), could go a long way toward ensuring that all nursing facilities have adequate staff to meet their residents’ needs. In addition, some states are enforcing their own state-specific staffing standards when facilities fail to meet them.
