This week, Katherine Vaczi, one of the named plaintiffs in Johnson v. Becerra, was featured in an article in the Philadelphia Inquirer. Ms. Vaczi, 81, has used a wheelchair since she sustained a spinal cord injury at age 23. She requires the services of home health aides for help with personal care activities, like transfers from her bed to her wheelchair and personal hygiene. The article describes her efforts to age in place in her fully-accessible home, which includes a garden that she loves and tends with care. It also explains the challenges she faces in accessing the Medicare-covered home health aide services she qualifies for under law. The Center for Medicare Advocacy recently filed the proposed class action to challenge barriers to Medicare-covered home health aide services for people with long-term disabilities.
