Dushanka V. Kleinman D.D.S., M.Sc.D. is Professor Emerita, School of Public Health (SPH), University of Maryland, where she served as the Associate Dean for Research and Principal Associate Dean. During her SPH tenure (2007-2023), she also served on several federal advisory committees and was appointed to co-chair the HHS Secretary’s Advisory Committee on National Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Objectives for 2030. Prior to joining SPH, Dr. Kleinman spent 28 years as a USPHS Public Health Service Commissioned Corps Officer, retiring as Assistant Surgeon General (Rear Admiral). Most of her service was at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) where she served as the Deputy Director, National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (1991-2006). She also has several details to the Office of the Surgeon General and completed a five-year term as the 15th Chief Dental Officer, USPHS (2001-2006). Dr. Kleinman is a Diplomate of the American Board of Dental Public Health, one of dentistry’s specialties, and currently is the Vice President of the Santa Fe Group, an action oriented oral health think tank. She has a D.D.S. from the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry and a hospital rotating internship at the University of Chicago Hospitals and Clinics. She received a M.Sc.D. in dental public health from the Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine at Boston University.
